CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Yukiko Amagi
AGE: 17
CANON: Persona 4 (Golden)

CANON HISTORY: Wiki Link
CANON PERSONALITY:

Yukiko Amagi is, at first glance, the stereotypical Japanese beauty. She embodies many of the traits associated with traditional beauty and femininity in Japanese society, such as being polite, being respectful, being hardworking and intelligent, placing others needs before her own in addition to being beautiful and fair-skinned. However, those traits are hardly the only ones that make up her personality, and people who know her will bluntly say that the image other people have of her is very much not the real Yukiko. At least, not the whole picture, anyway, because she does possess those qualities too.

She is extremely polite and respectful, unquestionably. She tries hard to make people feel comfortable around her when approaching them in a more formal setting, and her speech is just a little bit more formal than the more casual members of the Investigation Team. She approaches situations with adults and people she doesn’t know with a diplomatic air, clearly understanding the old saying that you attract more flies with honey than vinegar. She is soft spoken, making requests rather than demands, and plays the consummate customer service representative when dealing with most people.

It’s in private, among friends, that some of that politeness vanishes, especially if people expect her to be a doormat. Yukiko can be shockingly blunt, especially to people who don’t know that side of her. She’ll answer questions she finds invasive or annoying with a simple and terse “no” or simply say “I’m not interested in discussing that right now.” She still keeps that formal air and she doesn’t curse or swear, but she’s much more straightforward. People who offend her or come across as perverted or harassing in any way often earn an even rougher answer, and she’s not above slapping someone for making sexual innuendo. She doesn’t stand for impropriety at all, and some people (like Teddie) attest that she’s kind of scary when she’s annoyed.

Yukiko is an exceptionally hardworking and reliable girl, and that is in keeping with the image that people have of her. She works for her family inn dutifully and doesn’t try and shirk work in any form, while also managing to maintain her studies and be involved in school life. She is someone who does what she commits to, and is unflinchingly steadfast in maintaining her commitments. She’s also not afraid to say that she can’t handle something, such as helping out at Junes, because she knows her limits and won’t compromise the integrity of her work by spreading herself too thin. You could say she’s something of a perfectionist when it comes to her work, because if she’s given a task that she can handle then she will not only complete it, but she’ll excel at it even if it means doing a lot of extra research to make it happen.

Yukiko is an intelligent and clever student, always scoring among the top if not being the top, of her exams. She works hard for her grades, but she’s not the sort of person to put other people down for theirs. She often helps out her less studious friends with extra practice, even going so far as to redo material she has already completed with them so they get a better understanding of it. She says that she doesn’t really feel quite right letting other people struggle while she succeeds, and that the act of redoing stuff reinforces the material for her.

In her dealing with other people in a service, Yukiko is quite perceptive, often picking up on subtle hints and cues, and that’s thanks to her work in the hospitality industry. She has a bit of a knack for dealing with people in that way, at least. However when it comes to intrapersonal interactions within her circle of friends, and especially when they directly involve her she is very often completely oblivious. And I mean completely oblivious. She completely manages to miss the fact that someone is asking her out on a date more than once, or that there might be some tension between two members of her social circle. She’s more than a little bit airheaded in that regard and the minute details of interactions with friends often fly completely over her head. She also grows uncomfortable and changes the topic when it hits on her, especially if it’s something regarding her looks.

That said, Yukiko is someone who is initially fairly shy in casual social settings, as she has some insecurities about dealing with people who she doesn’t know well. Once she gets to know someone she gets a little less awkward, becoming a lively and engaged member of a group. She’s friendly and empathetic, taking bonds of friendship extremely seriously. She’s doggedly loyal, and an extremely supportive person when it comes to her friends. She often takes on a role similar to a beta wolf in her personal “pack”, pushing her friends ahead with unflinching loyalty and support, while showing no real desire to be a leader herself. She’s happy to build up the group as a whole, acting as a strong voice of encouragement but showing her teeth when necessary, such as when Yosuke is being a (gross boy) or Teddie is pushing the bounds of propriety a little too far.

Yukiko's biggest fear is being chained down or railroaded. She's been told all her life that she's going to be the one to inherit the Amagi Inn and take over the family business. She doesn't necessarily want that and feels chained down by the responsibilities and duty to her family. This is largely the source of her Shadow, the darker manifestation of her insecurities, and how it talks about wanting a prince to come and sweep her away. She feels trapped, and the fact that her Shadow appears as a bird in a cage is rather telling. It's a very, very obvious manifestation of her inner frustrations at being stuck on a path she isn't necessarily sure she wants to be on. It also represents an inherent sense of self-doubt in herself, as she doesn't feel that she has the power to change her fate on her own. It's also in this fight that she expresses a little bit of jealousy towards Chie, her best friend, because of Chie's apparent freedom and strength. It’s worth noting that by the end of the game Yukiko has more or less come to terms with the fact that she is going to inherit her family inn, but is comfortable with it not because she feels it’s expect of her but because it is important to her. She’s realized it is actually what she wants to do, a conclusion that she came to after doing a lot of soul-searching and making plans to leave Inaba.

As a final note there are some more comedic aspects to Yukiko too. She is an atrociously bad cook, and while she shows improvement in this throughout the course of the game (going from positively lethal cooking to merely tasteless) she clearly has no natural aptitude for it. She also has a somewhat bizarre sense of humor, and will burst out laughing at the strangest things. What strikes her as funny is very difficult for other characters to determine, but generally it’s terrible puns, jokes nobody else laughs at, and over the top, ridiculous behavior. Also gag glasses. These things are enough to send her into a giggling fit that goes on for far too long and definitely destroys any image that someone might have of her as a prim, proper, normal girl...

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

At first glance Yukiko isn’t a particularly imposing individual, as she’s slender and seems fairly soft but she’s passably athletic, enough that she could believably do well in high school sports. She’s actually capable of fighting using a war fan, which is presumably made of metal but that’s not where her real talents lie.

Yukiko, as someone who has faced her true self, has the ability to summon a Persona and utilize magic and skills through it. Her Persona, Sumeo-Okami, is focused mainly on using magic for both healing and offense. Yukiko plays the role of a Sage in traditional RPG terms, with no real specialization between attack and defense. Her healing magic is capable of healing near fatal wounds (and presumably fatal ones with spells like Samarecarm), removing status ailments, and the like. Offensively, Yukiko is able to use fire spells to inflict severe damage and strip an enemy of their resistance to fire. She also knows a variety of support skills that increase her damage and healing output, make her friends more resistant to fire, focus her mind to do more damage, and increase her evasiveness to her weakness (Ice).

Additionally, thanks to some self-reflection on bike trips with her friend Yu she’s learned a few extra skills. She’s able to drain magical energy from her foes to restore her own energy stores, decrease enemy attack, and use Darkness magic to KO weaker enemies. Basically she’s an archetypal RPG mage, with fairly weak physical stats but enormous magical talents.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Yukiko Amagi, though will answer to Yuki
AU AGE: 18 (Just turned)
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None.

AU HISTORY:

Yukiko’s AU isn’t terribly different from her canon history, so I’ll keep this brief and focus mainly on the highlights. She’s pretty much like any teenager save for the immigrant aspects, after all.

Yukiko was originally born in a small town in rural Japan, somewhere along the northern coast of Shikoku. Her family owned a small onsen in the area that was fairly well known but not exactly the most prosperous. With the economic downturn in rural parts of Japan in the late 1990s/early 2000s, the onsen business dried up and Yukiko’s family took a chance and immigrated to the United States. They opened a small Bed and Breakfast in Recolle and have lived there ever since. Yukiko, then age 6, was just old enough to have memories of Japan, but too young to have really formed much attachment to anything but the language.

She was enrolled in school when she turned of age, and spent her elementary school days doing what elementary school kids do. She often felt a little isolated for the first few years, struggling as she was to learn English as well as mastering the curriculum presented to her. One teacher, Ms. Ainsley Menodora (Mentioned with permission), really stood out and helped her through some difficult times. The help left a definite impression on Yukiko and started to open up more as elementary school went on.

At the age of 12, Yukiko became a naturalized US Citizen when her parents applied for and gained citizenship, which was a significant stride towards making her feel more at home and more like an American. She was still a little shy, but for other reasons, mainly her family’s business prospering and leaving her more financially well off than most of her classmates. She also spent a lot of time in middle school helping out with work, learning the ins and outs of the hospitality business but without the emphasis on taking over the business.

When high school rolled around, Yukiko started to get a little more involved. She joined the Tennis team and worked hard at that, she got good grades, and she sort of fell into a floating pattern. She never really spent a lot of time with any single social circle because she never really had too many close friends. She had a few people she knew and hung out with but they were scattered between groups rather than concentrated on any social circle. Basically she hung out with the preppy kids, the geeks, the goths, the punks, and just sort of anyone who would treat her nicely but never really fit in anywhere.

Because of this she started feeling like an outsider in more ways than that, particularly when it came to spirituality. She didn’t have the common thread of going to church, coming from a Buddhist family, and that got her curious enough to start dabbling in American Paganism during her Junior year of High School. She’s not out practicing magic or anything, but she definitely takes it semi-seriously like any teenager going through a phase of spiritual discovery.

She's excelled academically, and especially in Home Economics where her Hospitality training from her family come out. She's a good cook (for now) and a reliable study partner. Her family recently asked her to start doing deliveries for them in exchange for buying her a van shortly after she got her driver's license, and she's taken to that relative freedom with gusto. She's entered her final year of high school, her 18th birthday just passed, and that's the last major event in her life prior to Founder's Day.

AU PERSONALITY:

There are not many major changes to Yukiko's personality in the AU. The few that are present are do run deep, though.

She is a little more outgoing in the AU simply by necessity. She didn't have Chie to depend on and rely on, so she was forced to interact more with other people. This can largely be attributed to Ms. Menodora encouraging her and the lessons being taken to heart. Yukiko still has some of the shyness, but not quite as bad as early in her canon as she's been exposed to more people thanks to her floating social circle.

She also doesn't have the same fear of captivity and being trapped in a career she doesn't want, too, because her parents don't own that traditional inn. It's less a family business dynasty and more just a family business that doesn't necessarily require her to be involved in.

Finally, she's a bit less rigid and a little more relaxed in her attitude. This is because of her immigrant status, and since she's still something of an odd duck she doesn't fit in quite the same way she would in a rural Japanese school. Still pretty, still well liked, but definitely just different, and emulating more casual American customs is one way she'd try to fit in.
