[ Twenty minutes feels like an eternity, but there's no helping the fact that most other people can't just instantly teleport themselves to where they need to be, so he busies himself with pacing in front of the school building, eventually standing by the windows and peering into the glass, or drawing on the dusty window panes with his finger. ]
[ He blows the dust off his fingers before wiping his hands down on his pants, trotting up to meet her. ]
Do you come here a lot? It must be years since you graduated from elementary school... I remember playing make believe in the playground, and picking honeysuckle from the fence at the back.
[ A frown appears on Pharos' face, both at the word and in trying to find his particular tree. His feet come to a stop in front of one of the trees and he looks up at it, and the frown deepens. ]
That thing on my phone that people keep getting upset about, right? How do I lose it?
[Yukiko stops beside him, looking at the one tree. God she hopes it's there...]
It just goes away on it's own sometimes. I don't think it's a bad thing to have though. If anything, it's safer. You have more people you can stay in touch with.
[She's not really wanting to get into how dangerous the world can be with a ten year old. He's been through enough apparently, and the tree is clearly just another thing.]
What on earth...?
[There's no way a tree could have grown up so quickly...]
Just a moment.
[She starts walking around, looking for any sign of a stump or disturbed soil and of course finds none.]
Pharos, maybe your tree just grew up extra fast or it was moved. Because there's no sign anything was cut down. It's possible it got transplanted if the soil wasn't good for it though. But I know the school doesn't let trees get cut down out here.
[ Those are all words that make sense, but Pharos doesn't want to believe it. There's no way a tree could grow that fast in so few years as since he'd last seen it, and if it were moved, then they should've moved the tree back after fixing the soil. ]
It's a pine, though. It's the same sort of pine as mine, but this one can't be my tree.
[ He steps back, and looks around playground, the other trees in the garden that were planted by classes every year. They're all too tall. Frowning, he counts them off for Yukiko: ]
We planted them in order. First grade class of 2000. 2001. 2002. [ His finger remains pointed at the tree in front of them. ] There should only be five more trees after that. There's too many, and they're too old.
[Yukiko frowned and counted them off as well, working her jaw in surprise. This didn't add up. Not at all.]
Huh. Maybe...they broke that pattern for later classes.
[Circling the tree again, she waves at the earth around it.]
It's definitely been here several years, and see? It isn't cut down. So maybe it's just the world being strange again. Have you heard anything about that on your phone?
[ ...Pharos slides his phone out of his pocket. It's a different phone from the one Ryoji owned (water damage and the steep fall from unreality couldn't save it): small enough to fit a child's hand, a cheap basic phone meant for nothing more than calls and text, not fancy apps like the blue Retrospec app that appears when he unlocks the screen. ]
People from here told me about missing colors, and brought up horses. But nothing about trees, or making things grow, or time being weird.
[ It's too strange to accept so readily, the tree being so similar to his tree that he could almost accept it as being the same, just older. Born from the same seed, and just missing ten years of its life. ]
What was the storm about? Was it the rain that helped the trees grow...? Is that a good thing...
[ He's not sure. His imagination isn't enough to accept something changing reality, but his hope is. ]
Do you think it'll happen again? There's some parts of reality I want to change.
Pharos, I'm sorry, it's hard to describe the storm well. But it's not like a rainstorm, more like....have you ever heard of a lightning storm? Where there's a lot of electricity in the air, but it doesn't rain. It's something like that, but I think it was magic, instead of electricity. I don't really know everything, and I'm sorry.
But the people that told me about it said it was uncommon. So maybe it will, maybe it won't.
[ A storm is- Well, it's a force of nature, devastating and necessary and beautiful all at the same time, and one of magic feels too big for him to comprehend on his own. ]
I used to live in this city... It's only been three or four years, and this is the only thing that I had left behind. Now, it's like I never existed in the first place. But that's okay. Let's go see your tree.
[Yukiko will head towards where she planted hers years ago, stopping in front of a fairly large one not unlike his. It's only a little older looking, if it's older at all.]
[ There's nothing off about the tree, judging from Yukiko's expression, so why is it only his...? The uncertainty gets packed away and pushed to the side as Pharos approaches the tree, standing on the roots at the base so that he can place a hand on the bark. It's warm with the sun. ]
Hello, tree. My name is Pharos. There's a pine tree over there... do you see it? I'm sure there are many people who come by and look after it, and make sure it's watered and trimmed... But it could use a friend... when I'm no longer here.
[Not...really knowing what to say about this, Yukiko remains silent, letting Pharos talk to her tree. It's sweet, in a way. Cryptic, weird, but she's not sure what he's getting at.]
[ Pharos talks for a little while longer, his voice lowered until it's barely a whisper, and then he finally parts from it, stepping back and joining Yukiko's side. ]
Plants grow big and strong when people talk to them! That's what Mom always said. Breath moves the leaves, and provides carbon. So I think... lots of people have come to talk to my tree, right? That's why it's so big.

And yes, I surely do. If you are out of the hospital, do you want to meet me at the school?

Wheeling up, she hops down and walks over to the boy with a friendly wave.]
Hello there, Pharos. Are you ready?

Are you ready to go check on the trees, Pharos? And maybe see if the honeysuckle is still in bloom.

[ Pharos bounds ahead first, knowing exactly where the garden is and where his class got to plant trees all around the perimeter of the lot. ]
My favorite teacher was Miss Ainsley, but we never ate lunch together. Maybe I'll ask her tomorrow and see if she remembers me.

[She trots after him, letting her longer legs keep her up with him even moving more slowly.]
I think she will. She's pretty good about students and staying in touch. After all, even when she lost Retrospec, she still talks to me.

[ His voice trails off, clearly not as concerned about Retrospec than he is about this tree. ]
This is where I planted my tree. This is where it's supposed to be.
[ But this isn't his tree. It towers above the both of them, and if they cut it down to count the rings, they would find it 15 years old, not 5. ]
Card WHY

[That's the only explanation she can really come up with regarding that.]
But it feels like this may be it. Honestly, it's a strong looking tree, too. Growing just like you.
