He cares so much, and tries his hardest even if he complains. It's hard to be mad at him even when he messes up.

And really it's like being mad at a puppy. And that's hard.

He's the kind of person that's not really good at being himself in front of groups, of course.

I think maybe it's bad self image. But you'll fix that in time I'm sure.

It's not necessarily that I want the others to know... but rather, I know it's difficult for him, and I wish I could do something to make it easier. But you're right that time is the only real remedy.

Right. I know what you mean. He's...never had an easy time expressing himself.

It's like he's wearing a mask, trying to be macho.

That's a good way of describing it. There's a way he thinks he needs to be... and I can't say I don't understand that. Don't most people feel that way, sometimes? I just want to help him be happy as the person he is, not the person he thinks he should be.
