[ It hadn't happened till later, when he'd been thinking about what he'd seen when he found Ryoji in the forest that night. Ryoji had used some magic that Yu realized he'd seen before, and ever since he hasn't been able to stop thinking about what it means. ]

I fought him. With my...guardian angel. His own guardian angel went berserk and tried to kill me. Mine killed his first. Temporarily.

It felt the same as mine.

[ he'll chase up the whole "ryoji is definitely from wherever we're from" thing in a second. first he just kind of wants to confirm....

"killed" is a strong word. ]

Thanatos fell apart, and Ryoji was there. Like, literally broke apart. He was fine, aside from falling out of a tree.

I don't really know how. My...she...stabbed Thanatos through the heart, like some sort of samurai. And I remembered her name, then.

[ Well.

At least he can breathe again. He didn't even realize he was holding it until he read the words "he was fine." ]

Her name... what is it?

You know, I saw Ryoji too. No, Thanatos. But we didn't fight. I just talked to him.

Sumeo-Okami. The proper name for Amaterasu.

[That name should ring strongly in the head of any Japanese person. It's one laced with meaning, even to an immigrant like Yukiko who hadn't been to Japan in years.]

He didn't want to talk when I saw him. He just lashed out.

... I see. That doesn't surprise me. He attacked me, too, but seemed reluctant. That's actually how I guessed he might be part of our group, too. The magic he used was familiar.

The way he acted seemed familiar to me. It just...it was a sense. I don't know. But he's connected somehow.

I'm going to work with him as best I can. Maybe help him control it.

Yeah. I agree.

... we should do what we can for him. With Thanatos... he'll have struggles ahead. But we'll help him, won't we? As best we're able.

I've been practicing with Sumeo-Okami. Down at the beach, every day.

... so have I. Mostly alone, but sometimes with Souji. It's been getting easier to summon without feeling tired, and I can use its magic now.

I know for a fact Yosuke can't summon anything, at least not yet. That leaves Minako and Shirogane-san.

Good. Eleanor's been helping me with mine. Maybe we should practice together soon? I have a nice spot, away from people.

And I know Minako has that spear. And also a dog that fights with a knife.

I was about to suggest the same thing myself. That sounds great. Maybe we could bring the others at some point, even if they can't participate. Maybe watching us will help them get their own powers back. We'll have them stay at a safe distance, of course.

[ He can't even find that strange. ]

She did tell me that she did a lot of fighting in her memories. It's likely that she'll end up having powers similar to ours.

That may be a good idea. These memories are triggered by something I think. But I don't know what.

[A pause, several minutes of it.]

Naoto texted me. She's convinced I'm lying about remembering her. :(

What?

[ That's .... a much harsher treatment than he himself received from Naoto, and he finds himself frowning at his phone. ]

Yukiko-san, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. Accusing you of being a liar... you wouldn't do something like that.

[ What can they do? ]

I'll try and talk to her again.

I think she doesn't understand that I have trouble reading people and their intentions.

I mean, I admit it. I don't get clues sometimes. Ms. Menodora taught me a lot about American life and expectations, but I'm still learning.

I think she believed I'm lying because she can't believe I understand she's a girl, but didn't understand that she was deliberately trying to seem like a boy. I haven't ever met someone who's like that before, so how should I know?

To be honest, I feel similarly. If she's a girl dressing as a boy, she must have a reason for doing it. I don't really care what that reason is. She can do what she wants.

But it seems Shirogane-san cares a lot about that reason, and seems to think we might have some reason to try and uncover it, or think her gender matters.

Again, I'm sorry. You didn't do anything wrong. Her anger should be directed at me, if at anyone.

Right. I couldn't care less what gender she is. It doesn't change who she is at all. She's still Naoto. Boy or girl, she's still brilliant.

It's not your fault though, but thank you. I don't even remember telling you. It just didn't seem important, much like her gender.

That's exactly how I feel. I hope she knows that. Girl or boy, we'll absolutely need Shirogane-san's help in the coming months. I don't think we can do without her.

You barely did. From what I remember, we were talking about her, and you called her "she." That was all. All I really needed to do was see her again to get confirmation that you were right.

How strange. Is it that hard to believe I'm perceptive? =|

I hope we can work all this out.
